About
Long Ashton is the settlement most affected by and right in the path of the proposed ‘South West Bristol urban expansion’. Hola is the voice of the community wanting to retain the green belt and preserve our identity as a village separate from Bristol and surrounding villages.
10,500 house are demanded in the government’s Regional Spatial Strategy, which is expected to come into law this ’summer’ – unless radical protests cause a change of heart?
These are the separate developments facing the village:
- Ashton Park Ltd own around 80% of the land earmarked on current plans for the urban expansion, ranging from Ashton Vale to Withywood’s environs.
- Barrow Hospital: as well as the publicised plans for light industry and some homes on the existing built-up site, the owners have plans for 900 houses on the rest of the site.
- University land bounded by the railway, the bypass and Wild Country Lane: the university owns all this land, and has plans for 1400 houses, using the potential idea of a railway station as a sweetener.
- Bristol City stadium: the football club want to build a new stadium behind the David Lloyd sports centre, with housing on the site as well.
- Failand: 500 houses are proposed this side of Failand, within Long Ashton parish. This would double the size of Failand.
- Link Road: there are various plans for a link road between the A370 and A38, and extending to Hartcliffe and potentially round South Bristol to Hicks Gate.
- Bristol Airport: have just announced their proposed expansion, which would increase passenger numbers by 60% with corresponding increased noise, traffic, smells, and carbon emissions.
